About us
We are a Baptist church which worships in the Christian tradition.
We usually appoint ministers who were trained at a theological college but use occasional speakers from a variety of backgrounds.
Decisions are made through church meetings, which are held every second month. Together, members of our congregation prayerfully discern the mind of Christ so we can determine God's will and leading for our congregation.
We have nine deacons, comprising of men and women, who meet with the minister to consider the topics to brought before the church meeting and to make the practical arrangements to act on any decisions made.
Every Baptist church is unique and may worship and operate in many different ways.
However, many Bapist churches agree to associate so they can support one another.
This is often described as walking with, and watching over, each other.
We are in association with other Baptist churches through the Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB) and are part of the South West Baptist Regional Association.
Similarly Baptist churches are made up with people from different backgrounds and traditions who agree to gather to worship God and live in community with each other, despite their differences. As people of God, congregations also seek to be examples of God's love in their local, national and world-wide communities.
Baptist churches are often associated with adult baptism.
They believe that as adults we make a conscious commitment to believe in one God who is made up of three distinct persons: Father, Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit.
As part of a public commitment to that belief, people are baptised (submersed in water) to symbolise the new life they are promising to live.
People in our Baptist church may become an official member (able to vote in church meetings) if they can affirm such a conscious commitment. This may be because they have been baptised as an adult or because they have shown a similar commitment in another church. All people are welcome to attend our services, groups and church meetings even if they have not made such a commitment yet.
Baptist churches pay their minister directly and fund all the up-keep of their activities and buildings from regular donations from our congregation.
There are many other things that are linked to being part of a Baptist tradition. The Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB) has more information on these.
